agape love

I once read about the importance of having a quote in your post so I’ll be beginning this post with one about love.

“Thou shalt love the Lord they God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself”

– Jesus Christ.

A lot of people don’t fully grasp the concept of love or rather, they sometimes get it wrong. Love has been categorised into seven; Eros, Philia, Storge, Ludus, Pragma, Philautia and Agape.
I’ll be talking about the greatest type of love today: AGAPE. The unconditional love which doesn’t die, the one that loves all people. The 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 kind of love, the God kind of love.

Let’s go back in time for a while, to the beginning of the world, not the big bang theory beginning but the ‘Let there be light’ beginning. God created for six days and rested on the seventh. Now on the sixth day, He made man and out of all He created, He saw that man was ‘very good’. He made us in His image and likeness. He made us spirits who have souls and temporarily live in bodies while on Earth and of all creations, He gave us free will and a purpose (Gen 1:26-28).

That was just the beginning of our love story with God. Fast forward to the New Testament, the prophecy of the Messiah was fulfilled. He sent His only Son to us. Jesus Christ walked on Earth for thirty-three years, overcoming sins and temptations, healing and teaching us about the power we would possess after His resurrection; grace to overcome the lustful desires of the flesh, power to overcome sin. Jesus Christ then died for our sins, shed His blood on the cross of Calvary for you and me. For the whole world. All that we may be reconciled with Him forever. Do you know what it means to die for someone? Some might find it hard to die for a loved one, talk less of dying for someone who hates you.

God loves us so much and wants to be a part of our lives, not our ATM or someone we talk to only when we want something. He wants to be our good morning and goodnight, He wants to be the first person we turn to when all hope is lost. The One we seek to please at every moment, our best friend and Father. That’s why He gave His ONLY Son to die for the forgiveness of our sins, that no wall of sin may separate us from His presence anymore. He loves us so dearly that He literally becomes one with us when we are saved. He, the vine and we, the branches, He, the head and we, the body.

How are we saved? By grace, through faith, not of works lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Believing His Son died for the forgiveness of your sins.
Once, I was asked one thing I would love to change in the world. I thought for a while before answering.

Honestly, I didn’t have an answer till it was time to edit and I said I would like to change people’s idea of love because most people get it wrong. 1 Corinthians 13 tells us that love is patient, kind, has no envy, doesn’t boast and is not proud. Love isn’t selfish or angered quickly, it takes no account of evil. It takes no pleasure of wrongdoing but has joy in what is true. It has the power to endure all things, have faith in all things and hope all things. This is basically who God is. God = Love.

Love should basically sum up our everyday lives, when asked the greatest commandment. Jesus said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matt. 22:37-39)
So we love God, ourselves and others.

Your neighbours aren’t just the people close to you but every single human you come across in life. I listened to a message on ‘Inner Circle’ by Charles Metcalf and he gave the best explanation of the Good Samaritan, the love this stranger had for his neighbour.

Now I know some people get the wrong idea of who God is; they see Him as Someone who lets bad things happens and who demands people to behave a certain way but forget so soon that the sin in the world is what makes bad things happen. And He doesn’t demand we behave a certain way before Him. He’s the coolest Dad of all time and you can come to Him anyway you are and just the way you behave like people who you’re really close to, you tend to behave like Him.

That’s why the Bible warns us in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that evil company corrupts good habits. Even after man wronged him at the beginning, He found a way to bring us back to Him, paying the debt we owed Him at the expense of His own life. Now if this isn’t the purest kind of love, I don’t want to know what is.

Imagine owing someone a couple million dollars and they tell you not to worry about it and pay it back? That’s what He did and is asking that we receive life from Him in return. Like what?? You paid my debt and still want me to take life from you and love you? Sign me up! He’s asking for your love and He says ‘If ye love Me, keep my commandments’ (John 14:15) and what does He command? That you love! (John 14:21, 15:10). You see? A=B and B=A. and there is absolutely nothing to lose from loving Christ. Nothing at all. Remember you were made in His image and likeness, He is love so go out into the world and BE LOVE.
