Hey folks! It’s been a while and I’m happy to be back, I needed a break and in all honesty, I’m still taking that break. I’m hopping in for a while and I’ll be back by the end of the month, hopefully. We’ll be talking about the differences between attendance and fellowship…
So let’s dive straight in to today’s topic. In my school, attendance is something taken very very seriously. Class and chapel attendances are the most important ones, you need to have at least 75% attendance to write a course examination or it could lead to a carry over. For chapel attendance, there’s no specific percentage but to be on the safe side, try to avoid missing any at all. The con of this is, most people go to class or chapel just for the sake of it, to be counted present.
Being counted present isn’t bad at all but what is bad is that nothing is gained because of this. Nobody pays attention when all they came for was to sign a piece of paper or register their thumbprint , no focus is placed in that situation. Unfortunately, I’m counted among those who go to chapel just for the attendance.
What Are My Reasons?
The reasons I do this are:
- Attendance in chapel is very compulsory, as missing a certain number of services could lead to suspension. Andddd I’m really not ready for that.
- Sound doctrine is mostly not the event of the day. I really would not want to listen to it.
- Seeing as I can’t just walk out of the service because of this wrong doctrine, I have to sit my butt down till it’s over.
There. I have stated my reasons above. But this doesn’t make what I do entirely correct because I could listen to what they have to say, take notes, go back to my room and compare their teachings with what the Bible actually says and with that, I would be growing spiritually. Wow! I literally just spoke to myself ? and I should really think about doing just that when school resumes.
I’d like us to leave the four walls of my school for a minute, mentally of course. This same situation happens in our local churches or prayer meetings.
Some people just go there to “show face”, make e no be like say I no come (In English, so it doesn’t seem like I couldn’t come). I have also fallen into this category before, I would tune in to online meetings and just leave my phone so that at least, people would see I was online, whereas I wasn’t participating. This is nowhere close to being right, and I’m consciously training myself to stop it.
If I’m too tired for a meeting or fellowship, I’d rather not go at all or listen to it later on, if there’s a chance for that. But if at all I am to make my presence known, I would participate in whatever fellowship, fully. That is the true way to grow. Trying to just “mark attendance” is self deceit, no sugar coating, it is what it is. I have deceived myself sometimes and I’m willing to change. Are you in these shoes too? Let’s make a change together. Are you in?
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”2 Peter 3:18 KJV
Much love in Christ,
